New Study Shows Switching to Vaping Significantly Cuts Health Risk
A major review of nicotine products by researchers at King’s College London has shown that vaping is significantly less harmful than smoking. The study found that those who switch from traditional cigarettes to e-cigs will experience “a substantial reduction in their exposure to toxic substances that cause cancer, lung and cardiovascular disease”. The study also highlighted the growing number of young children who are vaping, strongly urging for action to stop non-smokers taking up the habit.
The co-author of the report, Dr Debbie Robson, stated that “helping people switch from smoking to vaping must become a government priority” with a view to create a smoke-free England by 2030.
The study and independent report was commissioned by the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities, in the Department of Health and Social Care. In it’s entirety, this is the most comprehensive review of vaping risks to date, with over 400 studies from around the world used to draw their conclusions. Two thirds of smokers in England were found to believe that vaping is just as harmful as smoking, however, the report shows that levels of toxic substances were the same or lower in vapers compared to those smoking traditional cigarettes.

Professor of health psychology and co-director of the Tobacco and Alcohol Research Group, at University College London, Lion Shahab, described the report as“the most rigorous, comprehensive and up-to-date piece of work” published on the topic in the UK. Shahab further states that, “We should ensure that adult smokers get the right support, which includes provision of accurate information about the reduced risk of vaping and how it can help them stop smoking, while also offering educational material to young people who would have never smoked, to discourage them from starting to vape, in addition to better reinforcement of age of sale and advertising restrictions,” he said. “If this balance can be struck, e-cigarettes can play a powerful role in consigning smoking cigarettes to the history books in the UK.”
While it is illegal to sell vaping products to those under 18 in the UK, the study highlighted a worrying trend in young people accessing vapes. The cause of this has been blamed on the amount of cheap disposable vapes with sweet flavours potentially targeted at a younger audience. The authors of the study have called for better enforcement to ensure shopkeepers and suppliers do not sell vapes for children.
